WipeOut XL

WipeOut XL is a futuristic racing game that came out for the Playstation in 1996. It was one of the first games that showed off what the 3D videogame machine can do. The concept of the game is similar to Mario Kart: Race against opponents with various weapons at your disposal that you can use to take them out. Of course what separates this game from Mario Kart is the speed and seriousness of it. It's pretty bad ass, you immediately get a feel for your craft and handling becomes second nature. The only bad thing is that there's no split screen multi-player.
The graphics are still cool, overly dark and solid. Compared to other games, XL's visuals hvae held up pretty well. It was one of the better looking games of it's time, and it's soundtrack is sick. There's about 9 techno tracks on there that fit the game perfectly.
The game is pretty short though, you can finish the whole thing in one sitting. Despite this, I find myself popping it in every once in a while and I still get a kick out of it. Maybe it's because there really isn't anything similar out there anymore. WipeOut XL is the only game in the series that's considered "classic". There are a couple installments in the series that have come out on the PS2 and PSP that hope to capture the feel of this game, I'm gonna check them out hoping they succeeded. | Post a comment
