Man this game brings back memories. I’ve played through this thing countless times, it’s right up there with Super Mario Bros. when it comes to a game that I’ve played so much throughout my life that I remember every detail about it. There’s an apple in that trash can, sword here, ninja dude coming out there, hidden 1up behind that bush…. I loved this game on the Sega Genesis and now that it’s available on Xbox Live Arcade it’s a must that I had to buy it. Fuck man, I was hella young when we were playing NES like it was the shit and one day we went to the store with my uncle (R.I.P) we saw the Sega Genesis bundle with Streets of Rage II and like regular kids we wanted it. The fact that he got it for us just like that was unbelievable and we were blown away. Big ass on screen characters, they all had different moves and bad ass music. We were hooked and to this day this game has a special significance to me as far as childhood and videogame memories go.
Streets of Rage II is a bad ass old-school brawler Sega came out with to rip off Final Fight. Fuck Final Fight, this is where it’s at. This game was released in Japan as “Bare Knuckle II: The Requiem of the Deadly Battle”. I dare you to come up with a sicker, more epic name than that. Anyway, you get a choice out of four characters and like a typical old school game – fuck character balancing. There are really only two choices to pick from: Max, the swole wrestler or Axel the agile kickboxer. The other characters are weak, a.k.a a chick and a roller skating negro. They have flashier moves but do much less damage. Here’s a video of Axel on one of the better stages of the game, the real dope level starts at 3:27.
Obviously the game has a nostalgic effect on me but I think the rating of 4 is justified. It’s a solid good time and you get to cop it for about $5. Play this game on the hard setting with someone else and you’ll have a good time. Some of the earlier stages aren’t as good as the later ones, the game definitely gets better towards the end. Plus, the boss battle at the end is G as fuck, total early 90’s material. Actually, this game is bien verga

what i hate about beat’em ups like double dragon & others is that your range is limited to your enemies range. usually the enemies are hella cheap so they hit you first. in this game you have a bunch of different enemies that attack you in different ways so theres different strategies you cant take to fighting.
each character has varied attacks & the specials for when you need to get out of some shit. the weapons are cool too. se cagaron when they made this game
