Frank Mir – Fighter Profile

By Ricardo | May 17, 2010

Frank Mir is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blackbelt heavyweight ex UFC champion. The reason I love this guy is that he has showcased BJJ in the heavyweight division like no other. He’s slick on the ground and moves so nimble that if you don’t know what you’re doing on the ground against him you’re done, son. Mir’s one of the first MMA fighters I saw when I got into this shit and I was a fan ever since. I love seeing him submit fools that think they’re big and bad with no ground game, it’s BJJ 101 motherfuckers.

I loved how he knocked Nogueira. His stand up is steadily improving and he’s packing on some weight to compete with the heavier fools in the Heavyweight division. I don’t think he’s going to be able to compete with Carwin or Lesnar in the size and wrestling department but if he can use his newfound strength and BJJ against these fools he definitely has a chance. Take that shit to the ground, don’t fear it and just take advantage of the position. If Mir goes to his roots and weathers the storm of these beasts I think he can recapture the heavyweight belt. Just look at the highlights, he’s submitted a bunch of fools and he broke Tim Sylvia’s forearm in an armbar submission.

Mir is cool, i hope he fights nogueira next. That first fight was no fluke. I think he can do good against anyone in the heavyweight division except Carwin & Lesnar. After the carwin fight i have no faith he can take them out

I saw the Carwin fight on Saturday…. i wish there was more to it to better get an idea. Mir did avoid getting taken down like twice but he ended up against the cage. He even got Carwin against the cage but Carwin switched position with him. It wasn’t even like muscling him in, it straight up look like a voluntary switch and Mir just seemed cool with being there.

In that interview where he explains what went wrong he said that he was planning on exploding out of that position in the last minute and steal the round. That’s when Carwin just started throwing those uppercuts and it was all over. I’m not sure if it would hvae been possible for Mir to get away from the cage but he should’ve tried and taken it to the ground on his terms. I don’t think Carwin is anywhere near as dangerous in Mir’s guard like Lensar is.

Anyway, Nogueira will get owned by Mir again if it goes down. Definite advantage in the striking but even on the ground Mir should be able to muscle his way out of bad situations asap.

I dont see nog winning unless its a reeal slick submission. Mir needs to play to his strengths still. he shouldve tried getting it to the ground against carwin. if carwin stands him up then well thats when he should stand with him.

I hope brock arm bars him :D

A Brock armbar is a scary thought :D

Nog always look slick on the ground but I’ve never been impressed with his standup. He always gets hit way too many times, these HW fools are no joke. I really want to see mir and nog in a BJJ war.

That’d be cool, but I doubt Mir would ever go for it. especially now after the first fight, he knows he can knock him the fuck out

I’d like to see that too, prove to people that the first time wasn’t a fluke. Nog’s never had good defense and now he’s getting tapped hard. The difference is that he can’t get fools in his guard when he falls so he gets smashed.

Oh and in the video above, Mir kicking the shit out of Anderson Silva at :31
