Army of Two: The 40th Day – First Impression

By Ricardo | December 18, 2009

Swooooole

The co-op demo that has you fighting through Shanghai as it’s being blown to the ground was made available yesterday and I got a chance to play it. The game looks awesome. Most things from the original game have been polished. The graphics are much nicer, with better character animations and more fluid co-op interaction between the players. The biggest improvement is in the controls: weapon cycling can now be done by pressing the Y button instead of having to hold LB and pressing another button to select.

The cover system is dope. All you have to do is crouch and move up against cover and your character adapts to it. It feels much more natural than having to “stick” to things using the A button in Gears. The coolest addition to the series seems to be the morality choices you can make. The demo has you choose whether you’ll obey commands to eliminate a partner for some cash or choose to let them live. Same with enemies: you can now grab one as a human shield, have the rest surrender, and either tie them up or shoot them while they’re defenseless. Or tie them up and shoot them. There’s obvious implications of letting a character live. Will he come back and return the favor down the line or will he come back strong and try to take you out? If done properly these type of situations can add depth and replay value to this game, not to mention differentiate it from Gears of War. It’s completely different from Gears already but a standout feature will help make this clear to everyone.

Make sure you download it and give it a shot. I was already going to get this when it comes out on 1/12/10 but this demo reaffirms that the game is going to be slick.

Yeah the missile shit was over the top, all coming out of nowhere. I’m not expecting the story to be all that great. Hopefully the focus is on the level designs. I liked how they tiered the levels so one person can take the higher ground or sneak the opposite side of a building.
