Why I Stopped Watching ‘Lopez Tonight’

The show was cool for a bit but after about a week I started to fall behind on the episodes. I set up a series recording and one day turned into two days behind, then three. A sense of urgency fell over me, like I had to make it a point to watch it over the weekend to be caught up come Monday. I probably only watched one episode that weekend and didn’t make it through the other three that were recorded. So… I started off the week behind and thought about just jumping in to the current show and just starting fresh from there. This is when I started asking myself why have I not made it a point to watch the show? This happened over a week ago and I think I’ve come up with most of the answers:
George as a Comedian
I’ve never really found George Lopez to be that funny. I’ve been hearing his material for years and I’ve noticed that I don’t laugh at it nearly as much as everyone else seems to do. I didn’t even like his sitcom. Part of it was because of mildly funny bits like “Why u crying??” and “I have a pain in my chess, and I can’t breavf” were okay at first but people started going crazy over it. Because of that every time he would perform he would put extra emphasis on that and go into a 15-20 minute routine of the “I can’t breavf” heart attack bit, each and every time more gyrations and physical comedy was added. Thank God he’s gotten over that since.
The bulk of the comedy is based on being “Chicano” and honestly I find a lot of what he talks about to be not relevant. For example, he loves to talk about Mexicans with broken down cars on their lawns. Funny, yeah we’ve seen people like that but it’s a far cry from saying “OH that’s ME RIGHT THERE LOL!!” Same thing with the ’slutty aunt that doesn’t have it anymore’. Mildly funny but not as universal as he makes it out to be.
His latest HBO special was pretty good. I watched it twice and what I noticed the second time around was that it wasn’t necessarily the jokes that had the people going, it was the motivational Raza speak. He definitely got more applauses than laughs because he talked about Sonia Sotomayor being appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
Tiger Woods
When I stopped watching Lopez Tonight the Tiger Woods drama was in full swing. Of course this was covered everywhere because it’s way easy for comedians to take cheap shots at it. The problem was that George devoted his entire monologue to the topic in at least three shows. I’m sure he’s gone at it even more since but holy shit It’s hard to tell whether you’re watching a talk show or TMZ. To make matters worse, most of the jokes are lame and punctuated by his most annoying habit to date which I’ll explain next.
Annoying Material
George seems to love high school humor. Stuff like fart jokes, especially in his older material where he would talk about eating something bad and farting. He would then make a farting sound in the microphone, stretch this bit out for like 10 minutes. Now he frequently talks about being so old that he’s sat on his balls and the occasional masturbation joke.
I’ve lost hope for clever material after seeing how many times he gets hung up with the word “allegedly” i.e: “Ah mira, that’s a big word, ‘allegedly’”.
Yet the single most annoying thing of the show, the one which I would say single handedly turned me off were those fucking stupid monanas he makes after telling a joke. If you don’t know, monanas are stupid facial expressions, the word probably comes from “acting like a monkey”. Every time he tells a joke which he thinks is hilarious or a “zinger” he does this stupid shit where he raises one knee, closes his eyes and opens his mouth to show his tongue, then does some type of left-to-right movement. This is one of those moments where you use a word you don’t normally do but it fits the situation perfectly: Fucking obnoxious. It’s just so fake and reminds me of a little kid that thinks he said something really clever, it’s especially embarrassing when he does it after a joke where the audience ended up not laughing much. I say ‘embarrassing’ because it’s annoying to everyone that’s seen it and I’ve gotten embarrassed getting caught watching it. It’s so bad that I used to cringe every time he did it. I was hoping that someone somewhere would tell his ass to cut that shit out, and even contemplated going to his site and sending him an email that he looked like a fucking culero doing that. Now I don’t cringe, it’s more like gritting my teeth now as I feel my blood boiling. Of course my reaction to that is probably to the extreme end of ‘dislike’ but I would think it rubs most people the wrong way too. I’m going to take a pic from one of the episodes and post that shit here.

Racial Talk, Generally Misguided
Lastly, this falls in with my ‘not liking him much as a comedian’. Now with a talk show, I realized that I’m exposed to his stand up every day which seems to be an overload. Mostly because a lot of his material has to do with race. I can only handle so much race talk, it gets overwhelming at times. You can only hear him so many times put on the white girl voice and say “OH MY GOD!” before you get tired of it.
Even the DNA tests, I don’t know if he’s gotten his shit together since but the Jessica Alba results explanation was a joke. She was surprised to learn that she was like 83% European and “only” 17% Native American. She asked if that counted Spain because she has some Spanish blood in her family. George replied by saying that she would get the results packet breaking everything down. That’s it, he obviously didn’t know what he was talking about. It was a frustrating moment sitting there watching this shit coming up with my own explanations for the percentages while this fool was telling her she was whiter than Larry David.
For the record: Mexicans aren’t 100% Native American. We have a varying degree of Spanish DNA. So… even a “full Mexican” would still have a significant percentage of European DNA. Jessica Alba’s mom is white. She would have to have dragged a Mayan from the top of some mountain for Jessica to even be close to 50% Native American. So you can see why Jessica’s results aren’t that surprising. Why doesn’t George take the test? Even his dark ass would probably have at least 30% European blood. It’s disappointing that he didn’t even try to get educated on this even though it’s supposed to be one of the unique features of his show.
And the whole “change” he would bring to ‘end stereotypes’…. what the fuck? If anything he’s reinforcing them with his street segments. It’s not very progressive, sure it’ll get the usual laughs. Maybe it makes him feel “edgy”. This is the same dude that turned down a role in Desperado because it was a stereotypically negative Mexican role. Really, George? But you feel comfortable doing that mock-Latina Barbie segment?
So…That’s It
I don’t hate the show so chances are I might catch it once in a while. I feel like I got this off my chest, especially after I had written that it was to be dope, give the guy a chance blah blah. Well I did and I can only take this in small doses. Maybe if it were 30mins instead of an hour it would be more tolerable. From what I’ve seen around the net he’s turned off a lot of people even before Lopez Tonight. All I asked was for people not to roast him until they gave the show a chance. Interestingly now I feel like why am I asking people to give dude a shot if he does shit knowing it will alienate some people? A que vato.

Is he still doing it? I get the concept of it, like The Shining, but it’s horrible. The few times I’ve seen it the crowd is mostly silent with nervous pitty laughs.

Anyways I see that every time some big celebrity comes on his show he kisses their A** too much, like putting them on a pedestal. I don’t know it seems like he’s really using his same material and sucking it dry.

Posted: Jan 9th, 2010 at 9:50 am9He was funny when he first came out but hes so hung up on being the first Chicano on just about everything he does that its annoying. Even my sister, who was a big Lopez fan doesn’t watch his show. She finds it offensive as well. The only time I sat through an entire show was when he had Morrissey on and when he had the cast reunion from his old sit-com. Conan is a lot of funnier than this guy. I am not a big fan of Leno either but at least he doesn’t dance around.

Posted: Jan 11th, 2010 at 9:42 am10I haven’t seen Conan in a while but yeah he’s definitely a lot better. He has that quick wit that George is seriously missing. The only time George tries to be funny on the fly is when a situation reminds him of a part of his old material or a tired stereotype. Then he’ll plug it in.
It’s cool that he’s the first and all that but that doesn’t guarantee him a free pass or automatic Latino support. I saw the reunion cast one mainly to check out the bad ass Constance… and I was trippin’ out how most of them thought of the show as the greatest thing to happen to TV.

It was weird to see all of them all emotional about it, probably cuz that’s the highlight of their careers.The show wasnt all that, i dont know anyone who really watched it or thought it was a great show.
I havent seen that fools show in a few weeks, i wonder if he’s still on Tigers dick.

Oh and the sitcom, holy shit when his mom was on screen it was one of the most annoying things I’ve ever seen. It was so predictable, a string of one liners back and forth with really weak setup. What made it more painful were the stupid laugh tracks…. that shit wasn’t recorded ‘live’ was it? I can’t imagine a group of people all in one room finding those scenes hilarious. A laugh track…. it had to be a laugh track.

The sitcom, haha. I don’t know how i watched it. . .it was mildly entertaining but i hated too much of it. . .i just wanted to like it i lied to myself about liking it. George’s best friend. Fuck that puto. Goofy looking fool, retarted as fuck. His mother. Fuck that puta. Always when George and her had dialog together it was, George-”you never loved me cuz blah blah and you blah blah” Mother-”i did but blah blah, so i blah blah, you where whinny blah blah” The Daughter always getting into stupid trouble. . .thats 4 seasons right there. NI MADRES!

Posted: Jan 13th, 2010 at 11:16 am14hahaha yeah the show’s watchable and you think “hey I like George, why no watch it?” It’s like Home Improvement where it’s entertaining but you’re not laughing at all. But what killed Lopez’s show was his stupid friend like you said. Hijo de la verga, what a 2 dimensional character. I remember they had a dumb ass guy like that in Home Improvement (that Italian guy Vinny, i think) but the big difference was that he wasn’t on all the time and Tim actually clowned on and didn’t like the guy, the way it should be.
And yeah every season was pretty much like you said. What was so stupid was that his mom was so unrealistically dry and even ‘evil’ for the sake of ‘comedy’, but then they’d try to do those sissy moments of “you were always hard on me” crying shit like you’re supposed to feel sorry or something. Fucking stupid.
