Interview- Genaro aka ‘Niyorco’
By Ricardo | July 15, 2008
Recently I got the chance to interview Genaro L. Zamora, author of Lockdown- A Barrio Tale and ‘Pretty Brown’:
Chicano Chronicles: Thanks for making time to do this interview, can you introduce yourself to the readers?
Genaro: Thanks for allowing me the pleasure of this interview. I am Genaro L. Zamora. Also Known As “Niyorco” through the internet, author and poet.
CC: What made you decide to be an author?
Genaro: Honestly, it was a combination of my characters and readers of my works. I’ve always had ideas in my head for stories and poetry, just didn’t dedicate myself to them as I wanted to. I really more like ignored them. But when you got so much creativity in your head, the characters are haunting and nearly screaming to be put out onto paper rather than float around in an imprisoned mind or something. So I decided to share my works when I came around a few internet sites that had writing blogs and poetry sections. Other people were sharing their works, and I decided to share a few of mine. It felt good to release my works and to my surprise, a great amount of readers were hooked. Their encouragement truly inspired me to pursue my novels. A dream I have always had but, was somewhat questionable about taking that first step.
CC: That’s cool, so you had an overwhelming positive reaction?
Genaro: Pretty much yeah. I mean, when someone is actually asking for your next drop. It’s a great feeling, an ultimate high to me. Doesn’t matter of how many like my works, just the fact that someone actually enjoyed it is almost unexplainable. Just puts a good feeling to someone you know? That was my goal, to entertain people with my works. To paint a picture in their head that they can no longer see words on paper, but a story in the back of their head.
CC: Yeah, that’s pretty powerful. Sounds like you get gratification from writing. Where do you find your inspiration? Your past or surroundings?
Genaro: Perhaps a little bit of both, but I can’t realy base it on that. As you may know, some of my poetry is dark, and it wouldn’t be right to say that I am surrounded by dark things all the time. The best way I can describe my inspiration is, my characters. I develop the characters in my head and then, the situations fall into play in which the characters, tell the story. Now, I may be inspired for the characters through my surroundings and a few past memories. That I can agree to. A simple portrait can inspire a character’s existence.
CC: Yeah I’ve read some of your poetry and there are some dark tones, but not without a thought provoking outlook on life. So when you have an idea or a character pretty much fleshed out, how do you go about writing the story? Is there a certain process you follow or do you just let the pen flow?
Genaro: It’s kind of hard to explain. But for me, the character already has a situation of some sort. It can be trying to achieve a goal or already be created with a bit of a drama. What works for me is, I put my self into the characters point of view, I basically become the character when I write. I have to feel what it’s feeling. The pen then flows. It works for me. I’d like to add that others works- rather directors, authors, poets and not all who have achieved big goals, but also many who share their works the way I do are a great inspiration as well. More of an encouragement.
CC: That’s interesting. Can you tell us about www.urbanobooks.com?
Genaro: Urbano Books is a publisher who offers a chance to those who truely seek it. They have given me more than I have expected in showing interest, and printing my works. I am happy that I have signed with them, so far, things are going good and I am fortunate that I was able to grab the chance that they were offering.I know of some publishers that wouldn’t want to take that chance.
CC: That seems like a great idea, and a very good opportunity. I see your latest book, Pretty Brown, is featured on there. Can you tell us a bit about this book?
Genaro: It’s basically a drama tale of two homies who have been in the dope game for some time. But in the dope game, control is a power that can keep people down who want to move up the ladder. One homie, “Freddy” is desperate to take over once he got the taste of more money, but he’s weak. His boy “Alex” has always had his back and now that Freddy wants to move up, Alex knows that drama will come with that ride from the Cocain king Sylvio. Alex wants to go on his own and legit. Away from the drama while he still can, Freddy knows that he needs him at his side which makes it hard for Alex to decide, until he meets Sandra, a girl who gave him the encouraging push that he needed. The thing is, Sandra seems to stand in Freddy’s way.
CC: Ha that sounds like an interesting mix. I read off and on, so a story that lags is probably the thing I dread most when picking up a new book. ‘Lockdown’ was cool in the way it just flowed from the beginning. Can we expect the same from ‘Pretty Brown’?
Genaro: I hope so. I tried to make it as gripping as I did “Lockdown — A Barrio Tale” and my other works. It all depends on the reader if they are entertained.
CC: Okay good. So besides books, you also write short stories and poems. Where can readers find your work?
Genaro: Mainly on websites like Soychicano.com, Brownpride.com, and Juarol.com. Or myspace.com/niyorcoI mainly post my works almost immediately after I write them. Other than that, you can do a google search under my pen name, “Niyorco”. As of right now, I’m the only one who carries that handle. I plan on organizing more of my works for easier access in the future. Meanwhile, I’d like to welcome everyone to myspace.com/niyorco and invite you to join my friends list, I would love to hear your thoughts.
?CC: Okay before I end this, do you have any advice for aspiring authors or people that just love to write?
Genaro: Just give it all you can, try the best you can in reaching your ultimate goal. Do some research and find ways to overcome bumps in the road. Never give up! Take others opinions as tools in shaping up your skill. Most of all, do it because you truly love to do it, and let that, be the only reason why you want to do it.
CC: Wise words. Once again I’d like to thank you for taking the time to do this interview. Good luck and keep me updated on your future work.
Genaro: Hey thanks for considering me for the interview, and even more, thanks for showing interest in my works. I look forward to entertaining you all in the future again. Till pen and paper meet again………..
