Author: Genaro L. Zamora aka ‘Niyorco’
I came across the author’s MySpace page online and decided to give the book a try. It sounded interesting enough and I was curious to read a fiction book with Chicanos for once.
The book is pretty short, which surprisingly made it more appealing because I knew I could finish it in a few days. After the first couple of times I read a few pages, I was already intrigued and found myself setting time aside to read some more to see where the story was going.
When Freedom is locked up, we get to see what it’s like for him to be the new inmate at the prison. The prison’s politics and hierarchy quickly become apparent, giving you a sense that a person’s actions will immediately determine their acceptance by other prisoners as well as alliances.
It’s a pretty cool story, it entertained me like I mentioned earlier. I found myself wanting to find out what happened with the characters once I was finished with the book. The complaints I have though stem from the novel’s short lenght. It felt like the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more and maybe a bit more backstory. Yet with this being the author’s first published book, ‘Lockdown’ is a very good debut and a glimpse of what we can expect from him in the future.
